The Perfect couple or the perfect lie?
A devoted wife…. a year ago Gemma met the love of her life, Danny. Since then, their relationship has been perfect. But one evening Danny doesn’t return home.
A missing husband…. Gemma turns to the police, she is horrified by what she discovers – a serial killer on the loose in Bristol. When she see’s photo’s of the victims she is more stunned… they all look just like Danny.
who would you believe?
But the police are suspicious. Why has no-one apart from Gemma heard fromo Danny in weeks? Why is their barely a trace of him in their flat? Is she telling the truth or is the marriage hiding some very dark secrets?
The story follows main character Gemma O’Connor on a terrible ordeal of findingout what happened to her missing husband, after returning home from a business trip, being the accused of a whole heap of things by the police and being treated like muck throughout the entire investigation.
The book was very much a slow starter and came across more like a romantic in the beginning, you could feel how much Gemma loved her husband and how desperate she was for him to return home.
When the police are notified about her husbands disappearance that’s when the pace picks up, and things start to get a bit weird. 100% you will be acting like a detective, reading in between the lines trying to work if Gemma has been lying to you…
That is exactly how it felt, I think I was about 60% into the book and I felt like i had been mugged off by my best friend, all the evidence pointed to Gemma. Needless to say, Gemma’s character was very well written. I felt a huge connection to Gemma’s character, I doubted her innocence but my gut feeling told me it could never have been her, she loved Danny too much.
60% of the way through and the book became un-put-down-able. Life was getting in the way of me finding out the truth, I was fully invested in this story, like i was living through it as a secondary character. I felt a rollercoaster of emotions while reading this book… Anger, betrayal, relief, happiness, half the time I didn’t know if I was coming or going.
The closer I came to the end, the more relief I felt, and I wished I had listened to my gut all along, I started to feel more at ease, like life would soon turn back to normal for Gemma.
That was until her husband came back and I felt HATE. I hated the author, just for a split second thinking she had taken Gemma away, but it was a flase alarm. I don’t think I have ever felt such a connection to a character before, the writing was simply superb and because of this the other characters albeit still well written were just all secondary to me, I didn’t care about them.
Another first experience for me was the goose bumps I felt at the end, when everything turned out just perfect, no more than perfect for her. I will definitley be searching for her previous work.
If you can endure a slow starter, till the half way mark and you love an action filled mystery. This book is 100% for you.
