She has never approved of you. But its when the body is found the secrets really start to come out…

From the moment Lucy met her husband’s mother, Diana, she was kept at arms length. Diana was exquisitely polite, and perfectly friendly, but Lucy knew that she was not what Diana envisioned. Even so, Lucy wanted so much to please her new mother-in-law.

That was five years ago.

Now, Diana has been found dead, a suicide note near her body. Diana claims that she no longer wanted to live because of a battle with cancer.

But the autopsy finds no cancer.

The autopsy does find traces of poison and suffication.

Everyone in the family is hiding something. But what? and where will the secrets stop?

With Lucy’s secrets getting deeper and her relationship with her mother-in-law growing more complex as the pages turn.

WOW, well let me start by saying, this book was not what I expected. What I expected was a thriller about an evil mother-in-law resulting in her death caused by the daughter in law. I couldn’t have been further from the truth.

Now, i wouldn’t go as far to say this book was a thriller. To me, it wasn’t and aside from fiction I wouldn’t know where to place it. It also couldn’t be described as fast paced, which is usually a must for me. However this book was steady paced throughout and had me hooked from beginning to end.

I loved each of the characters in their own way, they were all extremely likeable and relatable. Diana, the mother-in-law, I have to say was my favorite. In the beginning chapters she reminded me of like a Jane Fonda in Monster in law, and although I went from loving her to hating her soooo many times I always had that soft spot for her that I couldn’t shake.

The author sets the scene in this book superbly, with the separate chapters for different characters in the past and the present which I particularly liked. She knew exactly how to leave you hooked making you want to read just one more chapter.

It wasnt until 3/4 of the way through when the pace picked up and things started to get a little juicy. I constantly found myself trying to act like a detective, trying and failing to figure things out, then in comes the curve ball, followed by another ball that hits you right on the side of your head leaving you with the WTF kind of moment.

The ending for me, was the best, and although it was supposed to be a happy ending (which many will find it to be) for me it was sooo sad, it was like all the grief from the every page prior came flooding all at once, and I reflected on the whole of the book and not just the scene that was playing before me and my heart literally ached.

This book was incredibly written, maintained a steady and intriguing pace throughout, and kept me hooked from the beginning to end. This has been my favourite read of the year so far. If you haven’t yet read this book, i would definitely recommend you add it to your #TBR

Thank you for reading 🙂
